Every meaningful identity begins with understanding rather than making. Before exploring visual possibilities, I wanted to understand why the Maltese Cross has endured for centuries. Its shape wasn't created overnight. It evolved through different forms, cultures and periods before becoming the symbol we recognise today.
Studying that evolution wasn't about history alone. It was about uncovering the principles that allowed a simple mark to become one of Europe's most enduring symbols.
Understanding the Maltese Cross wasn't enough. I wanted to understand the environment that allowed it to endure. Through architecture, textures, typography and light, I looked for recurring principles that could shape a contemporary visual language.
Rather than adding another layer of design, the objective was to reveal what was already present. The identity grows naturally from Malta itself, allowing heritage and contemporary expression to coexist.
Great symbols survive because they continue to evolve without losing what makes them recognisable. Design plays a role in that continuity, not by replacing history, but by giving it new ways to be seen and experienced.
This project isn't about redesigning the Maltese Cross. It's about understanding how enduring ideas can inspire contemporary systems, creating identities that respect the past while remaining meaningful for the future.
